Table Skittles

I play table skittles in the Crewkerne and District Table Skittles league on Sunday evenings. Our team is named "The Squirrel" after the pub where it is based. When I was first asked to play my first thought was that it is a game for people with flat caps and walking sticks! My wife agreed to play in the same team I had been asked to join and a few weeks later I was asked to play one match just to make up the number of players in the team, so I agreed to help out for the one match. It happened a few times during the season and I found I was enjoying the matches I played in, so I began playing regularly. I also dropped the "Flat cap and walking stick" joke! I've been playing for a few years now and have definitely improved markedly over the last couple of seasons, though like most teams in the league we do our best but the emphasis is on fun.

Table skittles is a table top version of the game played on an alley, so there are nine skittle pins arranged in a diamaond shape. Each player has three throws of the ball per turn, the idea being to knock over as many pins as possible with the three throws, the maximum being 27 of course. The ball must go around the pole in table skittles and hit the pins on it's return toward the player. Scoring in table skittles is more like darts than alley skittles in that you start with a target score and must hit that number of pins exactly to win the game. There is no limit to the amount of turns that may be taken and the first player or team to reach the exact target score wins the game.

In the Crewkerne and District Table Skittles league we play the league matches first followed by the Team Knock-Out, Singles Knock-Out and Pairs Knock-Out competitions. There are four players per team and in the league matches the first game is a team game which counts only towards the Bernard Gibbs cup, not towards the match score. We then play two pairs followed by four singles games, then one more team game, and these are the games which decide the match score, so there are seven points available from each league match. The final team game also counts towards the Landlords cup.

So at the end of a fairly successful season we won the Team Knockout Cup and were runners-up in the Landlords Cup. One of our team also won the newly introduced award for the highest individual score of the season, having scored 26 on more than one occasion.
